Keywords are the most important start for anything you want seen online, including your online course. There are many tools that will help you find your best keywords but start with Google Keyword Planner, which is one of the best keyword tools you’ll find online to start generating keyword ideas…
…and today, you will learn how to access and use google keyword planner for free, without needing to create an ad or pull out your credit card.
But before we dive into how you can access Keyword Planner for free, let me take a moment to explain why you should even care about keywords.
Keywords are very important to you as a course creator because almost anything you place online can get quickly drowned out, and that really stings after spending hours creating your masterpiece. Don’t let your hard work be in vain.
If you learn how to find and use keywords properly, your content will get indexed and have a better chance at ranking higher on Google.
Keywords are also extremely useful at giving you clues as to what your market wants. When using keywords effectively, you can learn what your customers are searching for, what questions they are asking, what’s most important for them to know, and even what keywords are most effective at getting people to pull out their credit cards! If you take the time to do your keyword research well, you’ll come out with a roadmap for exactly the most in demand things you should be teaching in your online course and what words to use when selling your course.
So as you can see, keywords will provide you with insights and give you a better chance at ranking – and both these things result in audiences finding you, as opposed to you needing to track and chase them down.
I’ve created this video to show you how to create a Google Ads account to access and use Google Keyword Planner for free. If you do not open a Google ads account using these exact steps, the setup system will force you to enter your credit card and start creating an ad, and if you’re just getting started with building your course, this is not the time to start creating an ad;) So please watch and closely follow along.
This short video will show you exact steps you need to find your keywords as quickly as possible. I’ve even used circles and arrows so you know EXACTLY what to look for and won’t get side tracked by all the other options presented.

The best feature about Google Keyword Planner is that you can view the Google average monthly search volume for the keywords you add in. In other words, you can, at a glance, start making important choices about the short and long keywords you’ll want to use, plus the topics you will want to start zoning in on. Trust me, this far outweighs “guessing” what your target audience wants.
The magic is about to begin! Your new shiny free Google Keyword Planner tool will help to open doors to what your niche is ACTUALLY searching for. Think about how powerful that can be! With this keyword tool, you can plan your course and lessons around the absolute most important things to your target audience.
Using Google Keywords Planner is easy, but there are a few important things to keep in mind:
As mentioned above, knowing what your niche market is searching for online is very powerful when deciding on your course topic and when creating course lessons.
Begin by doing a search for your broad term/category for your course idea, then go down from there. Here’s an example. Let’s say I want to create my next course on something to do with online marketing, which I specialize in. I would start with a broad keyword search term, something like: “marketing strategy”. Using keyword planner, I discover that a better niche word, with high monthly searches and very good conversion (based on top of page bids) is “content marketing”. I do some more research and discover that “content marketing (for) online course” has good conversions, low competition and a good amount of keyword searches in a month in my target country. I found a possible winning niche topic for my next online course.
You can use your newly discovered keywords to build out your:
As you just learned, Google Keyword Planner is a great go to when you are starting to build your keyword list. So, use it for ideas and to begin your general list. From there, you can use other tools or Google Keyword Planner hacks to get even better results to make even better decisions about the topics you will zone in on.
For example, let’s say your course topic will focus on teaching people MS Excel. Should your main keyword be “learn excel,” “excel training,” or “learn excel online”? According to Keyword Planner, they all have monthly search volumes of 1000 – 10,000. So in a case like this, you will definitely want to do more research before determining your main go to keyword for your new Excel course because one of those words is much closer to 10,000 views per month than the others.
The best free tool I know of that will give you precise keyword numbers, is Neil Patel’s Ubersuggest Tool at https://neilpatel.com/ubersuggest/, which I highly recommend checking out. The free version of the tool only allows you do keyword research for 3 keywords per day, so I suggest using Google’s Keyword tool first, make a list of your top keyword options, then use Ubersuggest to view and compare the exact monthly search numbers for your top words. You will also want to use this amazing tool to view lists of questions people are asking (Neil acquired Answer The Public), related keywords, trends and more. When you know the hottest trending questions for your topic, you simple answer those questions through your course. Each question can become course lessons or topics within your lessons.
If you’ve got both the above tools in your back pocket, you are well on your way to creating superior content that will be in demand and get found online.
As an online marketer and course creator, Google Keyword Planner has helped me rank dozens of articles, websites, landing pages and more. I want the same for you.
